This is the chair Hearst used in his office at the Los Angeles Examiner after he relocated to Beverly Hills From San Simeon circa 1951. Finding himself falling asleep in his leather office chair, he chose instead this broken spindle backed wooden chair that pinched him and woke him up if he leaned back. The janitor took the chair out of his office, thinking it did not belong there. When Hearst got it back, he carved his initials “W R” into the top of the chair with his pen knife so that no one would take it away again. |
